S2 44. Helping out friends

Venla wipes her forehead and continues mixing cake dough. This is a huge challenge for her but she will do her best.

Madde called her sounding half hysterical half panicked and Venla really had to concentrate to get what was it all about. Madde's and her new partner's studio at @atelier.tea.o.rama is going to have grand opening and they missed the ordering dates for cakes and such. This is so typical Madde.

Nonetheless she heard herself saying: ”Calm down. I’ll handle it. How many are coming?”

So now the name of the game is how fast can you bake.
- Hello. I hope I’m in right place. I’m here to pick up the cakes for @atelier.tea.o.rama . Dark haired tall man says as Venla opens her door.
- Oh hi, Tomas! Venla recognizes the man by her door.
- Have we met before? Tomas asks looking slightly suspicious.
– Ha ha, many times, Venla is amused. – The wheelchair girl? She gives him a clue. Tomas gives her a long look all over and his eyes light up in regocnizition
– Of course you are! Venla wasn’t it?I didn’t recognize you.
– Without wheelchair? Venla laughs. He laughs too.
– No. You have grown up. Last time I saw you you were more like a teen and now you are full woman. Look at you now!
– Thanks!
– You shouldn’t try to be a wallflower though.
– Wha— Venla blinks, notices then her skirt and her hallway wallpaper. – Oh. I didn’t realize! She blushes uncontrollably.
– Sorry, had to! Tomas jokes.
– You are excatly the same as I remembered, Venla smiles.
– Like tired and worn out older dude? He winks his eyes.
– Oh come on! Venla giggles. – You can’t be so old. What are you, 34?
– Pretty accurate, Tomas nods. – 35 to be precise.
- It's good to see you! She beams inviting him inside to her deliciously smelling apartment.
– How’s your legs nowadays? Tomas looks Venla walking without diffuculties.
 – Not bad. I can walk, do most things other people can do too and there’s hardly any pain. Venla does a little dance to show how she can move and laughs on top of that.
– Is wheelchair out of picture now?
– If it’s up to me, it's gone forever! She emphasies The last word.
- That’s so good to hear! I’m happy for you! Tomas smiles kindly to her.
– Me too!

– So how did you get into this? Tomas asks and gestures to cakes.
- Into baking? It’s hobby of mine?
– I meant this Madeleine’s thing. Oh, hello. Lucky comes to check Tomas and carefully sniffs his hand and pants. – That’s cat’s scent all right, he says to Lucky.
– Oh. That! She called me for help and since I haven’t got much to do now I was glad to help, Venla explains. – Lucky, enough. Sit!
– So you are a dogperson?
– Always been. Lucky is my boyfriend’s dog though.

– Ah-haa! You have really grown! So who's the lucky man? Tomas raises his brows knowingly.
– No one you know, Venla chuckles. – He’s working in military and we are moving together to countryside closer to his new station.
– Safe sounding fellow then. Tomas grins. – Good for you! Uh. There’s a lot, he notices all the cakes waiting for pick up.
– Prepare to eat some cake. I don’t want to bring any of these back home. Venla carefully lifts one tray. – How about you. How’s life? Venla asks.
– Same old, Tomas shrugs as they start to carry cakes into his car.
Little atelje is crowded with people Venla doesn’t know. Madde is so concentrated to her phone she’s not any company. Venla feels like lonely outsider again. Ok. 10 more minutes and then it’s polite to say goodbyes.
- You are a good baker. These are delicious! Tomas compliments her as he’s going to take another slice.
– Thank you! Venla feels herself blushing.
 – Your boyfriend is a lucky man.
– He does appreciate my skills, Venla glows.
– I’m not sure do I want to hear all of this, Tomas winks with clear double meaning
– Stop it!, Venla burst into laughter. She can play this game too. – Why yes, he appreciates those too. This time it’s Tomas who looks he’s about to suffocate on his cake.
Tomas was always friendly to her. Probably he pitied her back then when she was still in wheelchair and always gave her his time and talked with her a moment or two. Venla cherished the memories. It felt precious then but it still feels good he does the same. Venla was always more hangaround with her sister’s friends than really belonged into the gang.

– Does he take good care of you? Tomas wants to know and sits by.
– Yes. I’m happy, Venla beams.
– Good. You deserve all good things in your life.
– Are you always this sweet to all your sister’s friends? Venla asks. Tomas laughs.
– Wheelchair girls may be my weakness.
 – Are you flirting with me? Venla giggles.
 – No more than earlier times.
– Ha ha, you are! Venla pokes him to the chest. – Seriously. That meant a world to me when I was still tied to that chair. That someone saw me and talked to me like normal person. Thank you.
Tomas’s smile fades and he looks serious.
– Nevermind. It was small thing to do.
– It was very thoughtful of you.
– I’m glad it helped you and now to see you can walk on your own and have your life sorted out. That feels good.
They talk more and Venla tells him more about Ilari, the house, her gameplaying, greenhouse and all and he listens.
