S2 54. Final countdown

Tomas gets two coffees on his way to meet Oona. She slept late but they are about to go for a walk. Tomas has a bad feeling after their roadtrip but tries to ignore it.
Oona and Tomas take a walk to Tähtitorninmäki. They need some peace and time and both know they need to talk.
– It’s much easier to breathe here, Oona says after drinking half of her coffee.
– and less of cat fur.
Both laugh a little.
– We used to come here often earlier, Tomas looks around. – Why don’t we do that anymore?
– There’s never time for it anymore, Oona sighs. - It was so much easier when you still worked within regular police.
Oona feels lump in her throat.

– Now it’s like you have two diffirent lives. The one where I’m in and another where I haven’t got a clue of what you are doing, thinking. With whom you spend your time with. Half of your life is missing.
- I wish it wouldn’t be this hard for you. Tomas takes a long sigh.
– I wish it wouldn’t be like this.
- I understand you can’t talk about your work, but I hate it when you leave. I never know when to expect you back of do you come back at all, Oona takes a Look around her like she would Be scared that someone was following or listening them.
– It’s not James Bond -life you know, Tomas chuckles.
– How should I know? You can’t talk about it either.

- We can’t officially live together, not get engaged or married, have a normal life. Just for ”national security”, Oona touches the old smooth surface of rocks. They are warm under her hand.
– Would you like us to get married? Tomas sounds suprised.
– I don’t know anymore. Once I did, but now… I don’t know.
– I’m sorry, baby, Tomas draws desperate sigh. They look at the view to open sea and archipelago. Seagulls cry and there’s light breeze. So perfect summer day.

– Sometimes it feels like we aren’t couple anymore. Tomas breaks the silence between them.
- Roommates with benefits? Oona tries to find the right expression.
– Not even that. It’s been difficult for a long time already.
– I know.
– We are not same what we used to be.
– No. I’m not the same woman and you are not same man anymore. I was insecure university freshman. You gave me ticket for speeding. Oona thinks back.
– I remember that, Tomas has a faint smile. – You weren’t speeding. I just wanted to get your number.
– You did? Gaah, you can’t even trust police anymore! Oona laughs out.
- I love you still. Tomas says with affection.
– I love you too, but…
- But what.
– It’s like you are my best friend, like my soulbrother but...
– Romance is dead. Tomas says out aloud what Oona couldn’t.
– Mm. She agrees reluctantly.
– I guess we have grown into diffirent directions over the years.
– And lost each other along that road. He sighs.

– Sometimes I dream we could travel through time, go back when everything was diffirent. Go out, have a laugh, share our whole lives. Oona closes her eyes.
Tomas sighs and hangs his head.
– If we would have chosen diffirently we could have had a child going to a school now.
– Want some vinegar with that salt you’re pouring into my wounds? Oona holds her throat. She feels like suffocating on mere thought.
– Baby, I’m sorry.
– Could you go back to how it was? She confronts him after getting her breath back.
– I can’t quit.
– Why not?
– I can’t tell.
– You can’t tell, Oona says excatly same time as Tomas. They exchange amused looks.
- You don’t deserve this kind of life. It’s sucking all happiness out of you. Tomas shakes his head.
– Are you dumping me? Oona frozes.
– I’m not dumping you. We should consider breaking up. Tomas looks thoughtful.
– So this is the end? Oona's voice is shaking.
– I don’t want to, but let’s face it. You are not happy, I’m not happy. I hate this but I have to let you go.
- Your mother is going to be thrilled about this, Oona says in wry tone.
– Mmh. Yes she will. I hate to see she was right about us, Tomas grimaces as they start their way back to home.
– She actually said that? Oona’s eyes grow large and angry. – That self righteous hag!
– I wanted to throw it back to her face, show her we are meant to be, but damn, she just won this round.
– I almost want to try still just to wipe her happiness away of getting rid of me.
– She won’t get rid of you. Tomas says with certainty and takes Oona’s hand. – Tell me I won’t lose you completely. Tell me you'll be still in my life.
– You won’t lose me. You are still my best friend, my closest person. I don’t want to lose you either.
– I can’t keep holding you from living your life, Tomas hangs his head low. - We had many good years. So many good moments together. Precious memories. I’ll never forget them.
– You made me the person I’m now. Oona wipes tears from her eyes. – I love you.
– Love you too, baby girl. But it’s not enough anymore.
– This is not fair, Oona cries.
– Life is not a movie. It’s not fair from the start. I don’t want to do this either. Tomas's voice is broken.
– Then let’s not do it. Let’s not break up.
 – Baby. Listen to yourself. Do you really see future for us?
- …No.
– There. You got your answer.
– How I’m going to go on without you?
– I’m questioning same from myself.
Oona feels Tomas's tears mix into her own as her heart breaks into tiny little shards.
